This set is simply extraordinary. It exudes elegance, and is so striking, it is sure to be the centre of comments at any party, being a real attention-grabber, and surely the start of many an interesting conversation.

This set features in several books on the subject of collectable vintage costume jewellery, including "Fifty Years of Collectible Fashion Jewelry 1925-1975" (page 33), and "Collectible Costume Jewelry" by Cherri Simonds.

Every inch a trophy collector’s set, it is big and bold and beautiful, and makes no excuses for being so. It seems to me that this set is emblematic of the general feeling amongst women during the era of its production.

After World War Two was over, many women who had helped win the Second World War with their efforts, either on the home front or in active service, did not want to return to being ‘only’ mothers and housewives.

They wanted more, and working for Sarah Coventry, selling cosmetics or jewelery on party plan part-time, was possible, and even combined well with their domestic lives and family. Most Sarah Coventry jewelery was sold at home fashion parties, from 1948.

Despite being more than half a century old, this stunning set is instantly recognizable, yet these sets were not produced for the general public, they were presented only to the top Sarah Coventry “Fashion Directors” (or hostesses), as gifts. Hence their extreme scarcity.

Couple that with the fact that one could not go into a store and buy this, it simply was not available in any department or even jewelery store, you will see why this set is so sought after, and so rare.

It is extremely unusual to find a complete set including the bracelet, ear clips, brooch/pendant, original chain, and even the matching finger ring. Generally, over the years, pieces are given away or mislaid. But here we offer you the full set, in excellent vintage condition.

Made from high quality giant smokey faceted emerald cut crystal stones, surrounded by delicate metal filigree, the entire set is rhodium plated. Rhodium is a metal from the same family as its better-known sister, Platinum.

The colour of the giant stones is unusual, appearing to change with the light. They vary from greenish grey, to almost charcoal when lying against skin.

And this colour goes well with everything. Team it with a little black dress for evening, or with your Brooks Brothers white shirt for work, you are absolutely guaranteed to look a million dollars.

The Ring:

Signed “© SARAH COV” (the earliest ever hallmark for this company, the ring dates this set to between 1949 and 1952.) It has an adjustable shank and fits my ring finger, which is European size S. What is remarkable to me is how the stone shines, despite it being set into a closed back setting. All rhinestones set around the huge grey central stone are present.

The Pendant/Brooch:

The huge brooch, which also doubles as a pendant when put on the silvered chain by the loop on the back, measures 1-7/8" wide by 2-3/8" high. It has a sturdy safety locking C clasp to ensure this beauty will not fall off. It too is hallmarked with the company name in the same fashion as the other pieces.

The Ear Clips:

These ear ornaments are so pretty on the ear, and lend a true touch of class.
These are the same size exactly as the front of the ring, and again, each piece is hallmarked with the same signature as the ring. Each clip has a comfort pad, which the buyer may want to remove. All rhinestones are present, and these look almost as good as the day they were made. In addition to the maker’s hallmark, the back of the clip has the mark “Pat. Pend.” Which means the patent on the design was pending at the time they were made. Each clips measures 1” x ¾”.

The Bracelet:

Measuring 7.5” long, this five segment beauty has a security chain (safety chain) to ensure it does not fall off. With five huge central stones, midway between the pendant size, and the earclip/ring size, this bracelet is a true timeless work of art.
The five links are secured to each other by two sturdy foldover connectors, and the clasp is ornately designed with a classic filigree design. The back of the central link has the same hallmark as the other pieces and all rhinestones are present, although one or two look slightly cloudy. This in no way detracts from the overall impact of this imposing set.

The Original Chain:

My extensive research on this set tells me that this is the original chain to the set. It measures 24.5” / 62 cms long and has a silver metal spring jump ring to securely hold the pendant. This is such a versatile set. You could wear the necklace and ear-clips together, or the bracelet and brooch together, or simply be the belle of the ball and knock their eyes out by wearing the whole ensemble. Many combinations are possible with so many matching pieces to choose from.

Background:

Sarah Coventry jewelery was named by Charles Stuart (the founder of Emmons Home Fashion). His grand-daughter was called Sarah.

Sarah Coventry jewelery was not available in department stores or jewelery stores. All their jewelery was sold direct to the public via parties hosted by “Fashion Directors”. This fabulous set was presented by the company to their most successful Fashion Directors, as a gift; a reward for their work.

Sarah Coventry jewelery was not designed or made in-house. It was mostly made by businesses based in Rhode Island, USA.

The popularity of Sarah Coventry jewelery increased rapidly and has enjoyed re-surgences over the years. The American television show “Queen for a Day” between 1956 and 1964 in which female members of the public who had endured hardship would vie to win the title Queen for that week. A “clap-o-meter” measured the audiences reaction and awarded the most clapped many prizes, including a quantity of Sarah Coventry jewellery.

Many collectors concentrate on the early sets, and this set “Celebrity” really is a celebrity with all Sarah Coventry collectors.

Within 24 hours of your payment (by Paypal please), we will carefully pack your treasure in a safe box, and ship to you worldwide. Please bear in mind that although in great condition, this is not a new set. There is slight surface scratching to the stones, and some little cloudiness to some of the rhinestones. It is in vintage loved condition.
