Corbin Key

This is a delightful key, very tactile and attractive. It is very slim and flat, and is stamped “Corbin Cabinet Lock Co.” around the outer edge of the three ‘leaves’ of the clover shaped top.

Under that, at the base of the key shaft, is stamped “New Britain. Conn.” On the shaft of the key is stamped “7W8”

New Britain in Connecticut was the main center of American hardware manufacturers even as early as 1775. Local ‘mom and pop’ blacksmith stores stocked many types of Corbin hardware, from hinges and nails, to locks and keys.

Local representatives visited the small towns of early America selling these quality American made products.

The American Hardware Corp was formed in 1902 as a holding company for Russell & Erwin and P & F Corbin whose companies merged. At the time of the merger, these two companies made almost half of all the hardware of this type in all of the United States.

The two companies retained their individual identity, and later, two other divisions were added, the Corbin Cabinet Lock Company and the Corbin Screw Corporation.
Phillip Corbin was the American Hardware Corporation’s first president until his death in 1910.

The Corbin Cabinet Lock Company was established in 1882 and in 1905 became a division of the American Hardware Corporation.

During both World Wards, the companies made many war related items, including gun parts and hand grenades. In 1950 they employed more than four thousand people and had three factories in New Britain.

This key is a small part of American social history, and is offered in very good condition.

Priority shipping and packing is included in the cost of this key.

Please note : This is for one of the keys in this picture. I am awaiting individual shots and will post as soon as available. Thanks.
